Identifying AI-generated images with SynthID
Tools called AI detectors are designed to label text as AI-generated or human. AI detectors work by looking for specific characteristics in the text, such as a low level of randomness in word choice and sentence length. These characteristics are typical of AI writing, allowing the detector to make a good guess at when text is AI-generated. This technology has seen rapid growth in sophistication and popularity in recent years, especially since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022.
As a human and a writer, I’ve been covering this kind of generative AI technology for almost a decade. Since AI is supposedly trying to take my job, I’m somewhat professionally interested in the whole situation. I think I’m pretty safe for now, but I have to admit that these AI writing tools are getting incredibly impressive, especially if you work with them, rather than just letting them spit out whatever they want. BCG’s generative AI experts have deep experience in AI technology, neural networks, generative models, the benefits of generative AI, and more.
It allows you to use AI to research keywords, find related keywords, and generate copy, all from the same web app. Frase is a powerful SEO research app with an AI text generator built in. This means you can find high-value article ideas, generate an outline, and have the AI assist you in writing them—all in the same app.

Google, AWS and Microsoft offer tooling comparable to AI21 Studio, as do startups like Cohere, OpenAI and Anthropic (and to a lesser extent marketing-focused vendors such as Jasper, Regie and Typeface). And AI21 Labs is at a funding disadvantage; OpenAI has raised $11.3 billion to date, while Anthropic and Cohere have raked in $1.6 billion and $435 million, respectively. All of the apps on this list offer at the very least a free trial, so I’d suggest trying some of them out for a few minutes until you find the one that seems to work best with your workflow. Sure, if you over-rely on the AI to solve all your problems, you’ll probably end up with an impressively generic story. But if you use it as a writing buddy to bounce ideas off and get you out of a rut, it’s got serious potential.
- On the other hand, for long-form original blog posts, it could make a difference.
- The outputs generative AI models produce may often sound extremely convincing.
- Where the apps on this list stand out is in how easy they make it to integrate AI text generation into an actual workflow.
Copymatic is another GPT-powered AI text generator (hope you’re enjoying the broken record here). Its long-form AI content writer allows you to easily generate long blog posts and articles by using multiple steps. Alibaba’s two latest models are built upon the company’s large language model called Tongyi Qianwen, released earlier this year. An LLM is an AI model trained on huge amounts of data and underpins chatbot applications. Google Cloud is the first cloud provider to offer a tool for creating AI-generated images responsibly and identifying them with confidence.
In a recent Gartner webinar poll of more than 2,500 executives, 38% indicated that customer experience and retention is the primary purpose of their generative AI investments. This was followed by revenue growth (26%), cost optimization (17%) and business continuity (7%). The good news is that, as soon as we observe user usage of this tool, we will progressively expand these limits. Unfortunately, free tools are always susceptible to spammers, so we must secure our website and keep it running for individuals who actually need assistance.
Text Generation Python Examples
In a six-week pilot at Deloitte with 55 developers for 6 weeks, a majority of users rated the resulting code’s accuracy at 65% or better, with a majority of the code coming from Codex. Overall, the Deloitte experiment found a 20% improvement in code development speed genrative ai for relevant projects. Deloitte has also used Codex to translate code from one language to another. The firm’s conclusion was that it would still need professional developers for the foreseeable future, but the increased productivity might necessitate fewer of them.
This makes generative AI applications vulnerable to the problem of hallucination—errors in their outputs such as unjustified factual claims or visual bugs in generated images. These tools essentially “guess” what a good response to the prompt would be, and they have a pretty good success rate because of the large amount of training data they have to draw on, but they can and do go wrong. Generative AI systems trained on words or word tokens include GPT-3, LaMDA, LLaMA, BLOOM, GPT-4, and others (see List of large language models). Some companies are exploring the idea of LLM-based knowledge management in conjunction with the leading providers of commercial LLMs. It seems likely that users of such systems will need training or assistance in creating effective prompts, and that the knowledge outputs of the LLMs might still need editing or review before being applied.

Given that the pace the technology is advancing, business leaders in every industry should consider generative AI ready to be built into production systems within the next year—meaning the time to start internal innovation is right now. Companies that don’t embrace the disruptive power of generative AI will find themselves at an enormous—and potentially insurmountable—cost and innovation disadvantage. As companies, employees, and customers become more familiar with applications based on AI technology, and as generative AI models become more capable and versatile, we will see a whole new level of applications emerge. Through generative AI, users can create music and lyrics based on their preferences of style, genre, etc. There are many uses for these tools in creative fields, including games, movies, and education.
The full scope of that impact, though, is still unknown—as are the risks. It’s an AI text generator, but it also has AI-powered video and image editing and an integrated social media scheduler included. On top of its AI-writing features, it can create content briefs specific to your business. The explosive growth of generative AI shows no sign of abating, and as more businesses embrace digitization and automation, generative AI looks set to play a central role in the future of industry. The capabilities of generative AI have already proven valuable in areas such as content creation, software development and medicine, and as the technology continues to evolve, its applications and use cases expand. It’s a large language model that uses transformer architecture — specifically, the generative pretrained transformer, hence GPT — to understand and generate human-like text.

Generative Adversarial Networks modeling (GANs) is a semi-supervised learning framework. Generative AI is the technology to create new content by utilizing existing text, audio files, or images. With generative AI, computers detect the underlying pattern related to the input and produce similar content. This is in contrast to most other AI techniques where the AI model attempts to solve a problem which has a single answer (e.g. a classification or prediction problem). OpenAI, the company behind the development of the technology, offers free access to certain models, APIs, and usage amounts.
Instead of writing a story for you, its AI tools like Describe and Brainstorm give you a writing partner to bounce ideas off and make a few suggestions. Even better, it’s one of the few apps that lets you directly select what version of GPT to use to generate text. Words generated with GPT-4 cost more than those generated genrative ai with GPT-3, but for the highest quality copy, it can be worth it. You can dive deeper into the specifics of how this works by reading more about natural language processing and how ChatGPT works. But for now, all you really need to understand is that these tools are impressive—even if they frequently make things up.
General Rules for Prompt Writing
This list will likely change a lot over the next year or two, but for now, the vast majority of AI text generators either openly use GPT or don’t say what models they use (but seem to use GPT). To learn more about what artificial intelligence is and isn’t, check out our comprehensive AI cheat sheet. A major concern around the use of generative AI tools -– and particularly those accessible to the public — is their potential for spreading misinformation and harmful content. The impact of doing so can be wide-ranging and severe, from perpetuating stereotypes, hate speech and harmful ideologies to damaging personal and professional reputation and the threat of legal and financial repercussions. It has even been suggested that the misuse or mismanagement of generative AI could put national security at risk.

When the metadata information is intact, users can easily identify an image. However, metadata can be manually removed or even lost when files are edited. Since SynthID’s watermark is embedded in the pixels of an image, it’s compatible with other image identification approaches that are based on metadata, and remains detectable even when metadata is lost. Traditional watermarks aren’t sufficient for identifying AI-generated images because they’re often applied like a stamp on an image and can easily be edited out. For example, discrete watermarks found in the corner of an image can be cropped out with basic editing techniques. Generative AI technologies are rapidly evolving, and computer generated imagery, also known as ‘synthetic imagery’, is becoming harder to distinguish from those that have not been created by an AI system.
And while you can get the AI to write a mediocre short story, please don’t. Anyword is definitely aimed at marketers, and its other tools—like the Data-Driven Editor and the Website Targeted Message—all allow you to target your content toward specific audiences and give things engagement scores. While I certainly can’t confirm the validity of any of these scores, they at least pass the sniff test. I generally thought the AI-generated content that Anyword scored higher was better—and even when I disagreed, I still liked one of the top options. While you can direct the AI to include certain details and mention specific facts for every app on this list, none make it as easy as Anyword. More than any of the others, the AI here feels like an eager and moderately competent underling that requires a bit of micromanaging, rather than a beast that you have to tame with arcane prompts.
